Holding a wedding is expensive. Money goes out in so many different directions your head starts to spin. With all this money going out, it's easy to forget about all the money that your friends and family are spending as well.
Travel expenses, clothes and tuxedo rentals, wedding gifts, and attending wedding events like bachelor parties and rehearsal dinners all spell out of pocket expenses for others. Doing little things to help alleviate these expenses can take the stress away from your friends and family and it can be done with very little effort.
If you have a group of guests coming in from out of town, it certainly is worth contacting a few local hotels to get a discounted rate. Some of the finest hotel rooms can be had at dramatic discounts for wedding guests. The way the hotels see it, if a group of people are staying at the hotel, it is more likely that they will spend more money on other hotel services.
If several guests are coming from the same area, it is worth calling a few airlines and travel agents as well. Sometimes they will find prices on airfares that are lower than the typical internet fares.
Another thing to consider is the timing of your wedding. Getting married during the off season can save money on hotels, airfares, and on big things like your reception hall as well. If you price things for a June wedding versus a december wedding with all of the same options, you will sometimes see up to a 50% difference in price.
When considering bridesmaids dresses, think a little bit about a split skirt/blouse outfit. At least one of the separates can often be re-used within their day to day wardrobe - meaning that they aren't spending hundreds of dollars on a one time outfit. Dyeable shoes are a good option because they can be bought at a group discount all at once - or you could select an outfit that simply required black heels allowing the bridesmaids to use their existing shoes. Give them the option to accessorize their dresses themselves - allowing for a little bit of uniqueness as far as things like purses, belts, earrings, and necklaces and thereby opening up the ability to use things from their existing collection.
When having get togethers like showers, rehearsals, and other planning events, suggets meeting at someone's house rather than at a restaurant or a bar. The cost of a potluck is incidental, and having several events where people are spending $20-40 on meals and drinks can really add up - especially if your guests are involved with more than one wedding during a year. Make it clear that the important thing is being together with friends.

I agree. when we had our wedding several friends and family approached me regarding the costs. We made changes to our wedding, so the financial presure of others would be less.
