This is a very disturbing article, on many levels. News24 has a story about a bride in Pakistan who was gang-raped on her wedding night, with the consent of her husband and in-laws.
This is the result of a tradition in tribal and rural Punjab (an area in Pakistan), where women are married without their consent in compensation for a crime committed by one of their male family members.

Surfing the web, I came across this article: Wedding addresses HIV stigma, which while brief, got me to thinking about weddings for HIV positive couples. In africa (where this wedding was held), this is a pretty big deal - a significant part of their population suffers from the epidemic. In the U.S. though, I wonder - is it legal for an HIV positive couple to marry?

In a perfectly adorable ceremony, Ashley and Jodie were married. The pre-schoolers held their ceremony in front of their classmates. Their parents were all present and taking photos, while classmates presided over the duties of ringbearer, bridesmaids, groomsmen, ushers, and flower girls. Good fun was had by all at the apple juice reception held shortly after the ceremony (although, just like at the big people weddings, there were one or two guests who had a little too much to drink).

Accross the ocean from our country that was founded on the principles of Freedom and Democracy, our previous oppressors have opened up their laws and their minds to allow for gay weddings. In our free country, we are considering constitutional changes, that would make it impossible for gay people to wed - thereby bypassing the inevitable reversal and dissolutionment of any "preventative measures" our lawmakers put forth because of the fact that such laws (however popular they are in the polls) are against our founding principals.
The first gay wedding in Britain will take place at one minute past midnight on December 21st of 2005. The first couple will, according to "The Independent" be Elaine Cook and Debbie Gaston.
