So, I recently read about how some people were arrested in Las Vegas for offerring, what the authorities called a "scam" to newly married women. The "scam" is a mailing that goes out to newly married women that offers to change their names on their social security cards for a fee of $15.
Now if you are like me, at this point, you are thinking identity theft...or something sinister like that type if thing.
However, the truth of it is far less of a crime...if it is one at all.
Apparently, the reasoning behind it is that the name change for social security is free. So, since you can do it yourself and it is free then to offer a service to do it for you is a crime. What?!?! You mean like valet parking.
I really hope there is more to this story than what I read, which unfortunately was just a blurb. Perhaps they were writing things in their letters to the women that made them think it would be a lot more money.
I did find this short post GrayScales - Scam, which talks about a similar situation where they were obviously trying to instill fear to get the money and steal the identity. However, that was not how the article I read was written.
After all, offering a pay service for something you can do for free is just pure American ingenuity and capitalism at work.
