Weddings are time honored traditions that many people forget are really about kicking off a marriage. Navigating ettiquette rules is difficult - especially with so many different interpretations as to what is right and what is not. It certainly is common for rules to be bent with many ceremonies and receptions, but which rules are bendable is really a matter of what is acceptable to the bride, the groom, and their families.

Communication and knowledge are very important. Going through an ettiquette book and highlighting some of the rules that you might find either questionable or difficult to follow, then discussing them with your fiance and families is a good idea. It's better to find out early on what is really acceptable to the families. It also helps out to get the word out about certain ettiquette rules to those who may be in the dark about them. For instance - it is against common ettiquette for a guest to wear a red dress to a wedding because no guest should be taking attention away from the bride and red dresses typically garner a good deal of attention. This is a rule I discovered at a friends wedding, and it was the first wedding that the girl who wore the red dress attended. The bride was very upset, and the bridesmaids had no idea about the rule. If it was something that was discussed among the family, word probably would have gotten around to the guest and the entire situation could have been avoided.
