As celebrities are competing to have bigger and bigger weddings, ordinary people are following the trend - the average amount of money spent on weddings is steadily increasing.
It can be a struggle for couples to prepare for the expenditures involved, and planning becomes stressful when it comes time to look at the numbers.
"The happiest day of your life could also be the most expensive day of your life", says Halifax Financial Services director Ray Milne. "To ensure the happy couple have the kind of day they want it's important that those involved in paying for wedding costs plan and invest over the long term".
More and more couples are expecting to cover the costs of wedding ceremonies and receptions themselves. Even if you are already in the planning phase of your wedding, it's not to late to start saving a little bit extra. You can ask for cash in lieu of a gift from close relatives - to help finance the honeymoon or to give you a little bit of a cushion to get your new lives together started. Saving just $25 a week - maybe by bringing a lunch to work instead of buying one can net nearly $1400 in the course of a year - enough to pay for at least one luxury item in your wedding.

We have been saving for our wedding for about 3 years now. We both agreed on a huge extravagent wedding, and decided early on to just save for it.
I'm sure it will be worth all the money :)
