A simple elegant white cake with white icing isn't enough for some weddings. The Wedding Cake can easily become a central fixture at a wedding reception - the piece that people will be talking about for years to come.
The 10th anniversary issue of Martha Stewart's Weddings is out now, and it shows cakes wrapped in modeling chocalate and pink velvet ribbons, topped with flowers, fresh fruit, real acorns or oak leaves.
It isn't entirely uncommon for brides to order more cake than their guests could hopefully eat at the wedding reception. Sometimes miniature wedding cake replicas are made for each guest, packaged in monogrammed boxes.
Presentation is important. Unique wedding cake toppers can be elegant, fun, or simply very appropriate for the bride and the groom. Presentation can be expensive too! Toppers can be had for as little as a few dollars, but they can also run into several hundred or more than a thousand for custom made and unique figurines.
Cakes can range in price starting again at a few dollars a serving to more than $30 - which multiplied by the number of guests that you are planning on can be a pretty penny.
Groom's cakes are becoming more and more prevalent at weddings, and often they are created and served at the rehearsal dinner rather than the wedding reception. Often they are themed with the groom's interests - like golf or football, and it simply is not appropriate to have it sitting next to an elegant and grandiose wedding cake.
Saving a section of cake and eating it on your first wedding anniversary is a popular idea, but the results can be disappointing. Properly storing a cake for that length of time and having it retain it's flavor is difficult.
