The Wedding Cake

A cake is synonymous with weddings. A wedding cake is often the centre point of a wedding reception and it is traditional for the bride and groom to slice the cake together. It is thought that a wedding cake is a symbol of luck. By offering slices of their cake to guests and friends they are offering a gesture of sharing their luck with others.

Most Hollywood wedding cakes are beautiful tiered creations, many different layers with wonderful colors and designs. They are usually coated with white or pink icing and are decorated by an ornamental wedding couple, this is to symbolize the new couple. Should the ornamental wedding couple break during or before the wedding reception, it is said to be a bad omen for the wedding.

The design and selection of a wedding cake is completely down to the individual. If you have an idea in your head of what you hope it will look like, try to draw it on a piece of paper. A skilled cake maker will be able to recreate your image. Remember, before placing an order for a wedding cake to consider how many guests you will have, as it is tradition for the cake to be offered to your guests.

Over the years, I have seen some really stunning wedding cakes. People have literally gasped in disbelief when they first set their eyes on the magnificent design. I have also witnessed some very original designs, one wedding cake we photographed for a magazine resembled the couple that had just got married. A very skilled cake maker was able to design the cake from a simple picture of the pair. I have also seen very good wedding cakes at theme weddings, in particular a huge horse drawn carriage design, perfect in every detail, apparently it took over a month to complete.

As you can see, your choice of cake is really dependent on your style of wedding. To many, the wedding cake is an important function of the wedding tradition, for others less so. Decide whether it is important to you.
