A new site has launched with a unique wedding dress preservation system. The jury is out on the effectiveness of their methods, but from the information available, it seems promising.
The service of course includes cleaning, in this case they utilize a wet cleaning system provided Troy Cleaners, a cleaning service well renowned - they were even contracted to clean one of Princess Diana's dresses. They are considered to be among the best dress cleaning experts in the industry.
Beyond that, the system they have developed seems to resolve many of the problems involved in Wedding Dress preservation.
At times in the past we have written about some of the things to avoid - certain kinds of tissue paper can bleed dyes and chemicals into wedding gowns over time, hangers and folding can leave creases, storage in wood containers like chests can also bleed damaging chemicals into your dress over time.
GownsForever storage method resolves a lot of these problems in a way that should have been obvious to all of us had we put any thought into it. The sheer obvious genious lends them credence and a certain amount of trust even though they are a new firm.
When storing your dress, they place it in a sealed container that resembles a popcorn tin you might see around christmas time. Of course they have gone beyond a sealed tin container with their engineering - the lid and interior are gold phenolic lined - thereby providing a non-reactive epoxy barrier between the metal in the container and the gown. Further when they seal the container, they fill it with argon gas - natural, non-toxic, and pure. Oxygen can cause yellowing and deterioration over time, and other preservation vendors try to resolve this by either vacumming all of the air outside of the container, or by minimizing the amount of air by using the smallest of possible containers. Both of these methods incur the added danger of creasing your dress, creating a semi-permanent pressure on the seams, or stretching the fabric.
To resolve these other concerns, rather than fold your dress and smush it into the container, it is neatly rolled to fit into the preservation chamber. They do not stuff the wedding dress with tissue paper at all. The minor wrinkling involved in this process can easily be removed by a fresh cleaning.
Pricing is impressive - cleaning of course varies, but the preservation process itself can be had for $160.
This is certainly a company worth looking into. I would suggest discussing the preservation of your dress with several companies and asking for referrences before deciding on any one vendor.
