Dear Wedding Dress Designers -
Stop freaking us out! It takes every bride way too long to realize that wedding dress sizes do not match up with the sizes of regular dresses. I don't know what it is in the fashion industry that decides what size a garment is, but whatever the criteria is right now, it should change for wedding gowns.
If there is going to be a discrepancy, it should be the other way around. If I wear a size 8 dress normally, I want my wedding gown to be a size 6, not a size 12!
Maybe sizing should be an issue all around for wedding dresses - a size for the bust, a size for the hips, and a size for leg length. Women come in far too many shapes and sizes for a single sizing system to work out for everyone.
If the store is recommending or insisting on a different size than you want, or feel you need - make sure you have them right on the receipt: Customer wanted size x, but store recommended size y. At least then you have a little bit of negotiating room when the charges start to pile up for alterations.
