In almost all cultures, it is traditional to give a bride and groom a gift on their wedding day. This is to help get them started in life, up until recent times a married couple would not have lived with each other before their wedding so it was customary to offer a gift of money or something for their new house.

This really is a time to consider what your needs actually are. Fancy silver is nice, but basic appliances can be more important. Making your themes and your desires well known makes the process easier for your guests and you end up with a great big pile of things you do want as opposed to a big pile of things you don't want and have to write thank you cards for.
