In almost all cultures, it is traditional to give a bride and groom a gift on their wedding day. This is to help get them started in life, up until recent times a married couple would not have lived with each other before their wedding so it was customary to offer a gift of money or something for their new house.
Nowadays, a lot of newlyweds already live together before they are married. This means that they already possess a lot of the more traditional wedding gifts, such as crockery and linen. This becomes very difficult for a guest to purchase something that is desired or of use, when buying a wedding gift it is always nice to know that it is a valued gift rather than something that will never be used.
This problem has been resolved by the wedding list. The bride and groom will sit down together and decide which gifts they would like to receive, these are items that they really would like or require. The list is then passed around guests before the wedding; guests can choose to buy a gift depending on their budget.
With modern day technology this process has become even more simplified. In fact, many of the larger chain stores and specialist wedding shops offer their own version of a wedding list. The couple will make a selection of gifts that they would like from a store catalogue or brochure; the store will then send the list to all of the guests. They even take care of delivery, sending all of the parcels to your home when you return from honeymoon.
