Making your own wedding invitations might not actually save you money. Buying small lots of outer and inner envelopes, and small lots of cardstock paper and vellum can be expensive.
Other downsides to making your own invitations are the amount of work involved. Thick or textured paper does not feed well through most inkjet printers, and even if you do have a double sided printer - it might not work well with your invites, either because of the aforementioned thickness/texture or because of the odd size of the paper you are feeding.
The upside to making your own invitations is in a job well done. What you can make is more creative and special than any vendor could give you. It can be a bonding experience for the groom and bride as well.
