How much you should spend is, of course, relative to what quality of invitaions would you like. However, invitations is not really one of those business where you get what you pay for.
You can often find the exact same thing for 20% less. You just have to shoe around. The average couple pays about $225 dollars per 150 guests, but you could pay as little as $70 and as much as $1000. Most people are going to stick to the $200 ball park though. For example, www.einvite.com is a great place to go and look, but they are expensive. However, they will send you up to 6 free samples, which if you like some you can use them as a comparison at other places.

Definitely don't leave out the good old yellow pages either. Normally, in yellow pages, I look for the bigger, better ads and call them first. My thinking being that they must be more reputable. In the invitation business though, it may just be that the person is only doing it as additional income and is willing to do hand written caligraphy ones at the price of your printed ones. You should definitely have your card stock narrowed down by the time you call the smaller guys though, it will just make the conversation easier.
Oh, and yes, it really is the same stuff for less price, so do your homework.
