In ancient Rome, it was believed that the ring finger actually was the only finger with a vein that flowed directly to the heart. The ring was worn then as it is today as a symbol of love with a direct connection to the wearers heart.

In Victorian times, it was fairly common to use gemstones to spell out messages or names on rings. This was more common on wedding rings than engagement rings.
Such rings are much less common these days as most wedding rings have become simple diamond settings with few gemstones. Dainty rings are more popular currently and offer less space for putting together such messages.
