More articles on the Wedding Rings topic: Wedding Ring FAQ

If you have received an heirloom as an engagement or wedding ring, there are a few things you may be concerned about:

Can I have it resized? Can I just hold on to it and pick out a different engagement ring? Do I have to keep it, I'm uncomfortable with the responsibility of such a precious heirloom?

We have the answers for you.

If you have received a family heirloom ring as an engagement ring, usually it is resized so that it fits your finger, but sometimes that is not possible because the ring is too thin to be resized. Jewelers can reset the stone in a similar setting, or alternatively they can custom make a duplicate setting but the family should be informed of the possibility of this happening to gauge their reactions.

If a ring has been in the family for several generations, it is perhaps best passed on as a symbol and kept in a safe place. The bride can then shop with her groom to be for a simple engagement ring in the appropriate size.

The bride should always feel comfortable in refusing to accept or in refusing to wear an heirloom engagement ring. These rings are important to pass along the family lines and it is entirely normal if you feel uncomfortable with the responsibility of caring for one.
