Gold wedding bands are still the most popular setting, but platinum wedding rings have been steadily increasing in popularity for several years now.

At this point it looks like about 29% of brides are selecting platinum settings, with grooms also showing an increase in platinum wedding band selections.

Platinum is not as strong as many jewelers suggest it is, although under normal conditions a platinum ring would outlast a gold counterpart.

It is almost twice as heavy as 14 karat gold, which gives a heft to the jewelry - which people naturally equate with a higher quality ring.

One thing to consider is that yellow gold tends to hide coloration in diamonds a little bit better than platinum or white gold. White gold does quikcly fade to yellowish - especially in jewelry that gets a lot of wear, such as a wedding ring. Platinum tends to be a little bit duller than white gold, but the original appearance will last longer.

Platinum also does not pose a problem for people with sensitive skin, whereas gold is often mixed with nickel which can trigger a reaction on some brides.
