This posting answers the question "I've been previously married. What rules exist regarding my existing wedding rings?"
Etiquette rules change over time, and different social groups are more or less stringent regarding etiquette rules than others. Having said that, we have put together some general rules of thumb that will help you out.
If you are a widow engaged to marry again, it is appropriate to stop wearing rings from your previous marriage. Possible destinations for these rings are keeping it safe for your son or daughter to use as an engagement ring. You may also want to have the stones reset in a different piece of jewelry - be it a necklace, another ring, or a pair of earrings.
If you are a divorced, it is appropriate to keep the wedding and engagement rings, but in this case it is poor etiquette to continue wearing the rings in their current form. Again, they can be held on to in order to pass them off to children or the stones may be reset into a different form of jewelry.
