In Victorian times, it was fairly common to use gemstones to spell out messages or names on rings. This was more common on wedding rings than engagement rings.
Such rings are much less common these days as most wedding rings have become simple diamond settings with few gemstones. Dainty rings are more popular currently and offer less space for putting together such messages.
They would do this by using the first initial of the precious stone as each letter. If you wanted to spell out the name Margaret for example, you could have a ring with the following stones set in consecutive order: Moonstone, Amethyst, Ruby, Garnet, Amethyst, Ruby, Emerald, and Topaz. Love could be spelled out more easily with Labradorite, Opal, Variscite and Emerald.
