Gold and platinum are durable metals and will resist being damaged by most chemicals.
Diamonds like being cleaned in any household cleaners - most window cleaners and will do fine. If you can take the smell, adding a dash of ammonia to some dishwashing liquid is an option that will work well.

Here's an interesting piece of information I came accross. Wedding bands have been worn for centuries by grooms, but only recently did the tradition become widely in use.
Although european grooms have a much longer history of wearing the rings, it was American grooms that brought the tradition to its current position as a wedding standard.
