Most videographers consider themselves artists. According to a book I was just reading, they do not like having you pick the music. The reason for this is that timing various video effects to go along with background music is sometimes tedious, and they probably have a music selection that they work with that contains all of the elements they like to incorporate as part of the video.
It would be odd, however, if they did not at least ask what kind of music you preferred. Keep in mind when answering this question that this is something that will be looked back on for decades. Including the latest trendy song is definitely a decision to ponder. Though using a list of classics might not be the most original idea, the songs themselves have withstood the test of time.
Think about all of the fathers out there now who's teenagers are looking at their wedding pictures in blue tuxedos and mullets. Sure those things are funny, but you should at least be aware that you will be providing comedy for your family down the road if you decide to go that route.
Most wedding videos run between 20 and 45 minutes, which is a short span of time if you want to include the full songs. With songs lasting between 2 1/2 to 4 minutes, you could be using as little as 5 songs throughout the video.
