Where Exactly do Wedding Vows Come From? Are they in the bible? What is that book that the officiant reads from?
The bible teaches many things about marriage, including values and commitment to love. There is no one passage that commands specific vows, however.
The actual ceremonial stating of the vows before a gathered audience is a cultural thing, not a biblical one. Legally, it's required to at least be done before a civil authority (in some countries), and for centuries now churches have seen a place for sanctioning marriage.
The history associated with wedding vows is unclear according to my research. When attending a traditional wedding, it is common to see the officiant reading from a book similar to the bible. The words are mostly the same from wedding to wedding (assuming that the bride and groom have not written their own). This book is not a bible, but in fact one of several common ceremony guides. Many officiants have taken to re-writing the guided vows to fit their style.
Many political municipalities have separate rules about what must be included in wedding vows in order for the marriage to be considered valid. I suppose to answer the question at least in part, wedding vows came from your regions historical politicians.
