In Australia, a disturbing trend is hitting the beaches - taxes on weddings! Several localities have instituted taxes for having weddings performed on the beach, and some even have additional taxes for filming your wedding if it is on the beach!
Local city councils are trying to increase their revenues for various reasons - ranging from mismanagement of budgets to helping to pay for pet projects.
The Bega Valley Shire Council's policy puts in place fee's of $120 for having a ceremony on the beach and an additional $500 to film the ceremony using a video camera.
It may not seem like much compared to other options, but $620 can be enough for some couples to have to avoid the beaches in favor of other free options, like homes and parks.
Beach weddings have always been free in the area and have always been a very desirable option. Putting these taxes in place can prevent some people from having the wedding of their dreams.
Locals in Bega Valley say that the council spends very little to no money in maintaining the beach and the fees are not fair.
