CNN is reporting that Jennifer Wilbanks (the bride from Georgia who ran away shortly before her wedding) has agreed to pay the city of Duluth, Georgia $13,250 to help cover the costs the city incurred searching for her.
The city itself will be writing off around $30,000 in other costs associated with the search, according to the article.
Whether or not this is a good decision by the city is debatable. They could probably have gone after her for more money, but only after expending an even greater amount in legal and court costs. On the other side of the street, I've never heard of any runaways or missing persons in the past who had to pay for their search expenses.
The real issue is this: If you or I ran away or went missing, what are the odds that a city would pay over $40,000 to find us within four days?
